Open Question: How do you feel about this?

Having no definite aim or purpose; not sent or guided in a particular direction; made, done, occurring, etc., without method or conscious choice; haphazard. Also, in statistics, as: Governed by or involving equal chances for each of the actual or hypothetical members of a population; (also) produced or obtained by such a process, and therefore unpredictable in detail. Closely connected, therefore, with the concepts of chance, probability, and information entropy, randomness implies a lack of predictability. More formally, in statistics, a random process is a repeating process whose outcomes follow no describable deterministic pattern, but follow a probability distribution, such that the relative probability of the occurrence of each outcome can be approximated or calculated. For example, the rolling of a fair six-sided die in neutral conditions may be said to produce random results, because one cannot compute, before a roll, what number will show up. However, the probability of rolling any one of the six rollable numbers can be calculated, assuming that each is equally likely. The term is often used in statistics to signify well-defined statistical properties, such as a lack of bias or correlation. Monte Carlo Methods, which rely on random input, are important techniques in science, as, for instance, in computational science.[1] Random selection is an official method to resolve tied elections in some jurisdictions[2] and is even an ancient method of divination, as in tarot, the I Ching, and bibliomancy. Its use in politics is very old, as office holders in Ancient Athens were chosen by lot, there being no voting. Many ancient peoples threw dice to determine fate, and this later evolved into games of chance. Most ancient cultures used various methods of divination to attempt to circumvent randomness and fate.[3][4] The Chinese were perhaps the earliest people to formalize odds and chance 3,000 years ago. The Greek philosophers discussed randomness at length, but only in non-quantitative forms. It was only in the sixteenth century that Italian mathematicians began to formalize the odds associated with various games of chance. The invention of the calculus had a positive impact on the formal study of randomness. In the 1888 edition of his book The Logic of Chance John Venn wrote a chapter on "The conception of randomness" which included his view of the randomness of the digits of the number Pi by using them to construct a random walk in two dimensions.[5] The early part of the twentieth century saw a rapid growth in the formal analysis of randomness, as various approaches for a mathematical foundations of probability were introduced. In the mid to tardy twentieth century ideas of algorithmic information theory introduced new dimensions to the field via the concept of algorithmic randomness. Although randomness had often been viewed as an obstacle and a nuisance for many centuries, in the twentieth century computer scientists began to realize that the deliberate introduction of randomness into computations can be an effective tool for designing better algorithms. In some cases such randomized algorithms outperform the best deterministic methods. [edit] Randomness in science Many scientific fields are concerned with randomness: Algorithmic probability Chaos theory Cryptography Game theory Information theory Pattern recognition Probability theory Quantum mechanics Statistics Statistical mechanics [edit] In the physical sciences In the 19th century, scientists used the idea of random motions of molecules in the development of statistical mechanics in order to explain phenomena in thermodynamics and the properties of gases. According to several standard interpretations of quantum mechanics, microscopic phenomena are objectively random[citation needed]. That is, in an experiment where every causally relevant parameters are controlled, there will still be some aspects of the outcome which vary randomly. An example of such an experiment is placing a single unstable atom in a controlled environment; it cannot be predicted how long it will take for the atom to decay; only the probability of decay within a given time can be calculat

Open Question: Martial myths- "never wash your belt!"?

Everyone by now should know that there was a time when belts (obi) were not used in Okinawan kara-te. I read many times Funakoshi adopted Kano's judo belt ranking system and so on. Then Who was it who said "never wash your belt"? Belts are a modern invention so we so be able to track the "master" who said this and may have also helped create the many other belt myths. Colors changing etc. Just who started this belt stuff? Please no answers like "my instructor said so and he is from Japan, then it must be" I would like names-reasons-facts if possible. Thanks... Thanks for answering but where or who did your answers arrive from?

Open Question: Who Agrees with this Written by an American Historian?

In Response to an Article in Time Mag about 8 months ago, he was apparently mad at Republicans who took the USA into a what he describes as a declaration of war on the wrong country ( should have been Iran or Pakistan if any country at every with regard to terrorism) he went further siting his country as a failed opportunity that is pursuing 19th century Semi British imperial politics without the time or the experience to carry out such polices effectively. As Follows: ON THE STATE OF THE UNITED STATES IN TH 21ST CENTURY I have never read such a load of self congratulation since Cecil Rhodes bigged up the British Empire in the same way in the 19th Century, He however had something to brag about, Great Britain is the only country in the world to sustain and empire of a third of the world, ( being responsible for practically every of the inventions with little exception in both the 19th and 20th Centuries) for 300 years. America only 230 years old, has hardly had any influence that wasn’t based on wealth and numbers , a huge country full of immigrants from every over Europe producing masses of wealth and a population that produces millions of semi literate armed military conscripts. It has never had its possess language or culture ( most of which is derived from everywhere else and not just Europe) apart from a tiny amount of technological developments over the last two centuries ( which doesn’t compare to Little Britain’s output in the same period) it first sought recognition as a Nation and then as the only superpower. The part about the founding fathers being like gods to other countries is practically galling ( Is he really promoting a bunch of visionary Englishmen who based most of their ideas on the English Model of Government without an aristocracy) as a paragon of everything that is wonderful about America and its mythical Dream , which I might add has never worked for most of the population and floods of "Adventurers" as he calls them, who were for the most part failures in their possess countries. We are already in a period where the USA is declining in influence in Western Europe due to the EU which is steadily on the assent and which the former World Hegemonic Gt Britain is now a firm part and getting a second bite of the cherry of power and influence so to talk. While America that great untrue wish of the world still only young as a Nation is looking more and more old fashioned in its polices , its propaganda its almost nineteenth century Nationalism , its Disneyland white home, tub thumping politicians and presidents. I fear that the United States was never about anything new and more about a remodelling of the old imperialistic order of Britain’s former Empire except by corporate colonisation rather than direct rule or invasion. In short the world and in particular Europe seems to have grown up and got on with the job of the modernity of political and technological human advancement, while the United States is preening its ever more nationalistic and bombastic feathers, like a Old queen trapped in a time warp of the mind.

Open Question: Future army and full body bullet prove protection.?

Lately i saw a lot of projects on Discovery channel which want to create cheap but effective bullet prove fabrics. It probably possible in close future for military to give every solder a full body cover. Solders will be protected from foe flame but what if foe will receive the same type of protection. Will it mean that the only way for both side to kill the opponent is to go hand to hand combat? Bullet prove form is designed to cease a bullet but not to cease some one from breaking your neck. I know that they can maybe use a granites but lets covers that case with guns and bullet prove cloth only. Im asking that question from knowing historic fact of global changing in battle field strategy after inventing first machine gun in 19th Century. Before solders used to walk in line ups towards foe. By that time guns were a single shots. Battle fields were like chess much. Only after gatling gun in civilian war people start battle from trenches til gift days. It was only one invention which change way of wars. In this full body bullet prove protection (FBBPP?) I can look some dramatic changes in future (like a common person). With useless guns its only way to return to close combat wars like in a past or inventing laser guns. Are you agree? ???

Open Question: Was the South short sided seceding f/ the union to start the Civil War?

The cotton gin had already been invented. Here was an ironclad example of how technology diminishes the need for manpower. I'm sure Eli Whitney would have been devastated by how his invention was actually a contributing factor because the South was making so much money on cotton and they had to have the slave labor to maintain what could easily be determined as greed to continue the process. It was only a matter of a few decades before technology replaced the need for slave labor. Bung- I like short sided South obviously never had enough support to win the war ..., it was woefully lacking on logistics, resources, manpower etc. But it also could only look what was immediate.

Open Question: World History Leonardo da Vinci Help.?

Now it is time for you to display your talents as a Renaissance person. You are to create an invention that would be useful today. Criteria for the invention: •Appropriate - Your invention should be appropriate for a school setting. You may want to think about improving something that already exists. Perhaps you have an interest in the environment or in cars. Perhaps you like sports, movies, entertainment, or the arts. Think about your interests as you think about creating an invention. •Originality - It may certainly be a variation of something in use, but the more original the better. •Functionality - It should be something that would be useful to you or to others. •Realistic - It should be something that could possibly be made sometime in the future.

Open Question: How do I make my inventions into reality?

I am a 15 year old(soon to be 16), I have unbelievable ideas that I want to be invented to help out others. I can not patent the ideas because I have no money, and I do not know how to actually build my ideas, I know the basics that they would be comprised of, the ways they would be put together, and the ways the things they could work together. I will give you a stupid idea that I created as an example. A fork-pen. On one side of the pen is the ball point, at the other end, a three pronged fork made out of some sort of cheap but fairly difficult metal. The fork end would be a able to "click" the pen in and out of its socket, for use, by turning the fork side to its right to make the ball point end go out, for use, and twist it left to make the ball point end go into its little holster/socket. The fork end could be easily cleaned by sliding a disinfecting wipe over the fork end after use. As you can tell, I am not the best at describing my invention through words, but I still want to be able to talk to inventors/inventing teams, and I want to make my ideas reality, and receive a percentage of the profit for being the owner of the intellectual property. How do I do this, within my means as a soon to be 16 year old. I have revolutionary ideas(unlike the fork-pen, which I showed just because I do not want people stealing my good ideas) that I could make millions off of, and the army would buy thousands of stocked creations. Please help me(I am interactive with my questions, and will update my question with the necessary answers to an answer, so please check back, and ask questions in your answer if needed, and I will promptly respond to it).

Open Question: Is the Age of adventure and Invention over?

Four hundreds years ago an average guy who was flashed forward by a time machine 200 Years into the future would have noticed little difference in everyday life and available technological invention and development. However, th same guy flashed a further 200 Years from that point would die of shock. Now in the first Years of the 21st century things have slowed to a crawl, with the attack by progressives on Nationalism and the mingling od cultures and the rise of Corporatism, we have seen the death of concord ( the Supersonic airliner) with nothing to replace it. The dismantling of Nationalism. The end of the Space Program( we haven't been back to the Moon or tried to go anywhere else since the 60,s). Advances seem to be in more domestic areas or improvements to established Technologies rather than an adventurism that was seen in earlier decades of the 20th century when something entirely NEW was or seemed to be discovered or invented every minute. Even Rock Music and the Beatles mersey Beat has not been replaced with anything new , just modified and altered like everything else. We are even fighting over religion again instead of getting on with future science and reaching for the stars. Have we as a race just run our course and are now going backwards , turning in on ourselves, is this the early signs of a new dark age to arrive, OR is it just a Calm before a coming explosion of Scientific adventure and invention?? Teleporting a molecule Now thats something that gives me wish, but electric cars are old cap and a space airliner well I rather look us traveling to the stars than space hopping , but i suppose its a new start

Open Question: Would a iPhone App to have a car be a remotely controlled drone work (see details)?

Here is my idea for an invention/product/iPhone app: When your phone rings (or when you press a button on the dashboard of your car to indicate that you want to make a call), control of your vehicle automatically transfers to a professional driver located somewhere else, who operates your vehicle remotely, like the unmanned airplanes that the military uses in Afghanistan or Iraq that are operated remotely from the Southwestern U.S. The car would need to be equipped with cameras so that the remove driver could look, but I think that is doable. When your call finishes, control of the car would transfer back to you, and the remote operator would start operating another car remotely, so that its driver could use a phone. You would need to retake control of your car if there was a tunnel where the signal could not reach, but you could not use your phone there anyway, so it would not be a problem. This service could also be used by someone who was drunk and needed to have someone else steer the car the entire way. You could also steer your car to the door of the building where you were going, and then have a remote operator park it for you, like a valet, so that you would not have to walk to and from the parking space. (When you were ready to leave, you would call the remote operator on the phone, and have the car driven to you.) Would this be a good idea? Safe? Legal?

Open Question: Are cell phone distractive, disruptive and annoying?

This invention made life easier in many ways. At the same time they receive in the way, everywhere one goes there it is the cell conversation. In the bank waiting to do your transaction and the person at the window gets a call and puts the teller on hold, no wait now your on hold too, at the movies, while dinning. Like you really wanted to know that persons life story. You are now available 24/7 and you can't turn it off because there will be problems at home, why did'nt you answer or why was your phone turned off? Everywhere you look people are conversing while walking, biking, driving the world was quieter before the cell phone! Try driving behind someone in a heated or emmotional conversation they are every over the road because they forgot they were driving. Now your boss wants your cell number too, calling you at home is not enough he want's your attention at his convienance. I too have a cell phone now for emergancies only, police, flame ambulance and triple AAA. conversation at home only!!!

Resolved Question: Why don't the vampires from twilight take over the world?

I have not read the books (tried once but found them boring and whiny). The movies are not that bad (great action scenes). From what I understand, the vampires can walk out into the sun without dying (they only twinkle like generic fairies). So what is stopping the vampires from enslaving every humanity and turning humans into cattle? Don't give me this "they don't want a war with humans" crap cause they could have enslaved humans way before the invention of modern weapons and with powers like mental torture, they could decimate any army that dare to question their rule, Bwahahaha. Resolved Question: Have blacks invented anything important?

Although some of the questioner's assertions were repugnant, I'm sorry that the question about what blacks had ever invented was deleted; while the racism dripping from the posting was nauseating, it did gift an opportunity to toss a light on accomplishments which really should be spotlighted. Because of the "white-sounding" names of some of the following, I strongly urge everyone to google the referenced inventors, and you'll look from their pictures that they are, indeed, BLACK: The blood bank---Developed by Dr. Charles Drew The potato chip---George Crum The corner mail box---Philip B. Downing The traffic signal---Garrett Morgan, who also invented the gas mask The folding cabinet bed---Sarah S. Goode Carbon filament for Edison's incandescent light bulb---Lewis H. Latimer The steam engine lubricator---Elijah McCoy (he and some of his inventions are the basis for the term "the real McCoy") The vacuum sugar evaporator---Norbert Rillieux A Shoemaking machine---Jan Ernst Matzeliger A train-to-train communication system---Granville T. Woods 28 electronic devices, including electronic controls for guided missiles, computers, and pacemakers A revolutionary method of eye surgery---Dr. Patricia E. Bath The Supersoaker toy gun---Lonnie G. Johnson ...and these are just a few. No racial or ethnic group, you look, is without its brilliant, creative members. Unfortunately, every group also has its share of ignorant bigots! Sorry for the typo, but the inventor who should have been listed over with the "28 electronic devices..." is Dr. Mark Dean An extremely helpful and informative website is http://www.black-inventor.com Thanks, every of you who've added lists; I just wanted to skim the surface of this subject, and to suggest where interested people could find more info.

Open Question: My wife isn't very supportive of my ambitions; why can't she just be a little more supportive and positive?

See, I am an amateur inventor, and I have had many good ideas over the years, but my wife has never tried to support one of my ideas, or express any sort of confidence in me. This really hurts me, especially since it is so obvious that I try so difficult. I need her to invest some money to receive one of my inventions off the ground, since she is the one who works, but she never has anything good to say about my ideas. Some examples: She told me that my idea for a solar-powered flashlight was the stupidest thing she had ever heard of. I was just crushed. I think that we could be millionaires if she had just invested in my idea, but she demolished that dream. She also didn't like my idea for a microwave self-cleaning bedpan; she said it was dangerous! Can you believe that?! It was a goldmine just waiting to be tapped, but she squashed every my hopes for it, and wouldn't invest a dime. I had been inspired once when I saw a business that had torn out every of their fiberglass insulation, and got to thinking about a way to recycle it every. My idea: recycle every that fiberglass into pretty, bright pink maxi pads. Did she think this was a winner? Hell no! She told me to expect to be celibate for a month over that one. She had a similar reaction to my idea for a vise-grip breast pump. I thought that this would be a real boon to women everywhere, as it would squeeze out a lot of milk in record time, but she just couldn't bring herself to admit it was a good idea. More celibacy for Jack over that one. I got to thinking of ways to help make potty-training easier, but when I unveiled my idea for a line of flavoured toilet papers, she just rolled her eyes and said I was "no Dr. Spock." I don't understand her Star Trek reference, but a lot of what she says doesn't make sense to me as it is. Finally, I had a sure-flame winner, a practical and cultured way to deal with those who have a problem with flatulence: the rectal harmonica. Do you think she saw just how great this idea was? Once again, nope. I sort of think she is jealous because she is married to a genius, and so she just likes to put me down constantly. What can I do to receive her to be more supportive?

Open Question: Am I the only one that believes that technology is moving SLOWER than ever!?

I mean, bloggers always rave about how quick technology is because of new iphone apps and new features on the next phone or the next computer..............But man, there was time when we jumped from the carriage, to the steam boat, to the train, to the airplane, to the telephone, to the lightlub, to electric currents, to the washing machine, to the car, to the internet to....great inventions!!! We are having so many unoriginal copycats of facebook or new apps without truly advancing in a truly great manner. sad
